- Kanishtha Joshi

Electricity has proved out to be a great boon for the entire world. From removing darkness, to protecting us from heat and cold; electricity has its wide applications in every arena of our lives. Today we cannot imagine our lives without electricity.
Every field from engineering, entertainment, medical, construction and even education makes use of an ample amount of indisposable electric power.
This not only adds up to paying extravagant bills but also causes harm to the environment.

People nowadays are becoming more conscious and aware towards saving as much electricity as they can. Mostly, the reason is to reduce their bills. But each day you save electricity, it not only translates to adding money to your bank account, but also helps you conserve resources.

The whole point of saving electricity lies in the fact that electricity is generated from natural resources, the number of which is limited. Isn’t it our responsibility to make some changes that might literally, cost us nothing?

So, take a pledge to switch off all the fans, lights and any other electrical appliances that are not in use.

Here are a few tips for you:
-Turn off lights in the room when there is nobody. If you have a bad memory, write a note as a reminder and put it in a visible place at the entrance.
-Power down your computer and unplug it at the end of the day. Computers use a lot of energy, and when they stay plugged in you're wasting both energy and money.
-Make sure to check twice before leaving home to ensure that all the lights and fans are switched off.
-Try to arrange your workspace so that natural light floods your desk. Keep the overhead lights off when possible. When you need extra lighting, use a low-powered desk lamp instead.
-Did you know that appliances that are plugged in keep using energy even when they’re switched off? Unplug any appliances that are not in use.

Using these few helpful and easy tips learn to save electricity. Take a pledge to switch off all the appliances when not in use. Pay reduced bill. Save electricity. Let’s pledge!

Exchanging gifts, wearing the attire that we probably planned a month before, decorating our homes with fairy lights and diyas, not keeping track of how much calories to take in, bursting crackers and sky shots; that’s what Diwali looks like, to all of us.
Except, it’s time to make some changes, don’t you think?
Is it still fashionable to spend thousands of money just to see it burn? Not just that, burning our chance to a sustainable environment too?
We have set several modern trends from how we dress up to how we speak. But there are still a few things for which we need to go back to the traditional ways. And this festival of lights calls for such a celebration - where we light up our homes with the diyas and the candles, where we choose a cracker-free Diwali and fairy-light our house with coloured lights.
Where Diwali brings happiness and brightness to our lives and not pollution and health hazards.
This Diwali, let us take a pledge. Say no to crackers. Make it a better Diwali for the destitute kids who risk their lives in the factories. This Diwali bring happiness to your home and theirs.
With the ban on the sale of crackers by the Supreme Court, we have all the more reason to go eco-friendly.
So crackers from the previous year? Throw them away.
See someone bursting crackers? Stop them.
Celebrate Diwali- the eco-friendly manner! Let’s Pledge!

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

We currently live in a society where there is a problem of over consumption and with this, comes the increased amount of garbage. You know when you buy a pack of chips, eat it and throw it in the trash, how many items there are in it that can be recycled?

Recycling is the third R of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Everybody knows it’s is good for the environment, in the sense, we are using old and waste products which are of no use and then converting them
back to the new products.

A society is not just defined by what it creates, but by what it refuses to destroy.
Recycling serves two purposes. First, it helps to reduce landfills and hence avoids air and land pollution. Second, it helps to reuse valuable materials in other forms and not waste it.

What can you do? Here’s the answer-
1. Try to avoid the use of plastic bags as much as possible. Also, when you sho, try to look for items that have less packaging. Use cloth bags when you are buying groceries.
2. Donate unwanted furniture to charity shops or to someone who is in need of it.
3. Ensure that you buy products in bulk that way less packaging is used and that even costs less per amount.
4. Recycle the small used materials.
5. Use food grade glass containers to store dry fruits and leftovers.
6. Save things that you have used already and get creative.
7. Encourage others to recycle.

Resurface. Repaint. Refurnish. Make something old new today! Recycle because you care.
It’s a small planet. Let’s pledge. Let’s Recycle.

Is there an alternative to water?
The answer to that question, is NO. Obviously.
They say we never know the worth of water, till the well is dry. Unfortunately, our actions show that we couldn't be less bothered of a time like that to come.
So let's fast forward to a time, when we're desperately trying to save water. Not because we care, but because we have no option. Like that last week of the month, when you've exhausted all your monthly income.

What do you see? No domestic chores being completed. No industries, so we can forget about our handy products. And oh, no agriculture, so no food for us. I give us a month, maximum.

So how about we quit procrastinating and begin implementing plans, right now! How can you help? Let's begin with one simple step.
Step #1 - Let us start by turning off the tap when we're brushing our teeth and switching to shorter showers.

Let us pledge, today!

Are you giving back as much as you are taking away from the planet, if not more?

Ever since the invention of the wheel, this world has developed for all these years bringing ease to the life. But there has always been a love-hate relationship with the vehicles. Today, with over a billion of motor cars running on the road, it seems as if we can never escape the pollution and honking of these vehicles. Like the nature might never flourish again; the degradation might never end. It is difficult to fight against the millions. But if even thousands of us get together, that would be a great uprising!

Change doesn’t come in an instant. It takes time. But it will come, if we all pledge to change ourselves for at least a day.

As Eric Britton said, “Every day is a great day to take a few cars off the road and think about it.”

Today, as we encourage you to travel without your vehicles, we also ask you to study carefully what exactly goes on during this day. You might see the roads getting less jammed. People getting less violent. And the air getting much cleaner to breath.

Pledge & Perform!

Are you breathing today? Thank a TREE.
This is something we are taught our whole life- how trees are the most valuable and important source of life on our Planet Earth. How very critical they are to the healthy and vibrant communities on the earth.

Through their limitless servings, we enjoy the life we were blessed with.
Sadly, we also tend to take it for granted.
So tell me - as human beings, what about our responsibilities towards them?

In times when Deforestation has led to Global Warming, Acid Rain and the Greenhouse Effect, ‘saving trees’ has become an issue that we urgently need to address.
So, if we want to live life the way we want to, we ought to be a little less careless about it.

Without this “Green Gold”, as they famously call it, there would be no one to bless us with the oxygen that we get, fruits and vegetables that keep us healthy and medicines that cure us. And these are just a few things.

The need of the hour is not just to educate ourselves but also our coming generation.
Much of this wouldn’t be necessary if we remember the 3 Rs that were taught to us our entire school life- Recycle, Reduce and Reuse.

But until this changes, we need to put more trees than there are- plant two against cutting of the one.
Plant a tree today! Go ahead, take that pledge!

That one hazard that’s universal and traverses regional boundaries is littering. 94% people have identified littering as a major environmental hazard. Moreover, national governments around the world have taken monumental strides (‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan’ and ‘Clean Streets = Clean beaches’) to combat this demon that haunts the sanity and safety of people everywhere, but to no avail.

Not only does littering ruin the aesthetic value of a locality, but it also leads to a range of other problems that pose a grave threat to mankind. Millions of dollars have been spent to combat the issue of incorrect disposal of waste, with millions more due in the near future unless we find a permanent solution to this problem that eradicates this ill-habit right from the root.

Its imperative we understand that movements will not single-handedly create an impact, people will. This week, we, at the DeedIndeed Foundation, are back with yet another impactful pledge, a pledge that asks you to stop one stranger from littering the streets and explaining the harmful effects of doing so. This will be your attempt of safeguarding mother Earth and why not? Its your world, you need to take charge!

Nature is choking, screaming for help. Ever thought of listening to it? Ever thought of letting it breathe? Think about being in a situation where you open the door and all you see is a giant heap of plastic bags. Even the thought of a situation like this is a claustrophobic one.

That’s the exact scenario we have created for our nature and the creatures living in it. But we never considered working for the cause. We are so busy and consumed in our daily life that we have stopped giving a second thought about our environment that we live in. The very environment that has been serving us since ages. That has always given but never asked for anything in return. The one that expects its children to protect it.
It’s high time that we finally reflect upon the lessons that were taught to us in our environment classes about how harmful these plastic bags are. The lessons that taught us that plastics cannot be decomposed.

So let’s stop the use of polythene bags and be a part of the solution.
As quoted famously, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” It is important that when we leave, we leave behind a beautiful place to live in, for our coming generations.
Take a pledge to start a movement of inspiration, youth empowerment and saying no to plastic bags. Use paper bags! Avoid plastic ones!

When we decide to leave the comfort of our homes and step outside, that's when it strikes us- when did our streets get so dirty? How did we let that happen?

What irks the most about poeple littering is the laziness of it. We’ve heard our teachers or our parents preach on several occasions, that a clean room means a clean mind.
Let us imagine our state of minds, if the streets were kept clean.
If when we inhaled the smell of salt and sea as waves lapped at our ankles, an empty polythene cover didn’t wrap itself around our toes? If our local park was usable as a park and not a local dumping ground? If only we cared just a little bit more.

The roads and beaches, the parks and the bus stops- they are as much yours as they are others'. It’s not about saving the world and being a hero. It's about something much more-respect. Littering sends a clear message of ignorance or even worse, indifference. By not putting in the effort to maintain a level of cleanliness, there is a level of respect to yourself, the environment and the people you share that space with, that is forgone. Can we not fall into a cycle of misuse, misdeeds and mistakes?

It’s not enough to litter less. It’s enough to care for the place that you and me and others live in so as to not litter. It’s enough to stop someone if they’re littering. It’s enough to educate someone who doesn’t know any better. It’s enough. Let's stop littering. Go ahead, take that pledge!

We think Food Wastage is a problem that simply concerns people who are directly on the receiving end of it; but it’s not. It is a Global Issue.

It is something we witness everyday- in the office canteen or at restaurants. Enormous amount of food being ordered, but sadly not consumed. What happens to the food that you waste?

It now sits at the bottom of a garbage can. Instead, it could have been fed to a starving child. If a child in our country dies approximately every five seconds as a result of malnutrition, then don’t you think it’s time we take the matter in our own hands?

We at Deed Indeed have pledged to make an effort for the same. Do you feel as strongly as we do about believing that no child should go to sleep on an empty, starved stomach?

Then join us, and pledge to make it an issue that concerns every single one of us. Pledge to minimize food wastage- do not buy more than what you need. And if there are leftovers, make sure they don’t make their way to a garbage can.

1.3 billion People, insufficient agricultural output, and a staggering CPI of 3.65%;

Does the aforementioned mismatch ring a bell?

Widely regarded as the biggest impediment to our growth, poverty has had devastating effects on the rise of this country. The direct result of this multi-fanged demon is malnutrition and hunger, which primarily erupts from the inability of people to make ends meet. Moreover, scarcity of food is set to keep vital nutrition’s out of reach of the poor. As per GoI, 22% of the country’s population sleeps hungry. To add to it, we rank No.1 on World Bank’s list which highlights prevalence of underweight children, that too by a huge margin.

A burning issue has been highlighted; we at Deed Indeed are set out on a mission to bring about a visible difference, and urge each one of you to feed someone on your way home today. Not only will this reduce domestic waste but also create a ripple effect, an effect of goodness.

Do it for the smile of an underprivileged person who sits on a pavement you cross everyday; it’s a good deed, indeed!
