Mumbai, being as cosmopolitan, is crowded, a city of towers, enthralled with Bollywood, Cricket, Finance, Entrepreneurs and much more. But this very commercial city is slowly dying under the great burden of bad health and hygiene, poor cleanliness and sanitation, and low level of education. Even in the 21st century, when the world is progressing at a faster pace, people fail to understand the need for personal and environmental hygiene, and the various deadly consequences that the lack of such brings.
But amidst of all this, one Mumbaikar stood up to acknowledge this threatening issue, to bring back the nostalgia of the good old days. Mrs. Kunti Ojha, an ambitious woman, started an NGO called “Clean Mumbai Foundation” in 1992 with the dream of having a population well aware and enthusiastic on hygiene and cleanliness. With intentions so pure, the NGO attracted, and still is attracting, many volunteers who contribute to the cause in different ways with great determination and consistency. The NGO took a creative path in educating every age group of the population so that the needful is conveyed in the best possible manner. It holds “Earth Day” for children and seminars on environmental issues at school level every year, it celebrated “Swatchta Pakhwara”, and participated in the “Socho Alag- Plastic Free Campaign” and “Save Deonar Project”.
Apart from this, the NGO has been an active participant in the projects such as The Rotary Club, Indian Merchant Chamber and Mumbai First, that has widely contributed towards paving the path for hygiene and good health amongst the citizens. It works hard day and night to improve the lifestyle of people and to build a world where every individual prioritizes hygiene and respects the earth as its own. The NGO faced different problems everyday but the biggest of them all was breaking the rude habit of improper discard of the waste in the streets, which is directly linked with the lack of proper education. But it maintained unshakable patience and continual commitment, for the seed of enlightenment was sown, only the growth of the plant was being awaited. Motivated by the hard work and dedication of the NGO, organizations such as BMC, Maharashtra Central Board, etc. contributed funds for the growth of the genuine cause as they believed that the first step towards establishing a great future for the country is to ensure the wellbeing of its people. It has earned various accolades for the great work and is recognized by the Governor of Maharashtra and The Municipal Corporation of Bombay.
The NGO with its success has proven that ‘Anything is possible for those with a dream, a plan and the will to make it happen’.
