THE NEED
Non-communicable diseases (NCD's) are the world’s number one killer, causing 60% of all deaths globally. 18 million women die every year from these silent killers. In India alone, cervical cancer kills 1.32 million women per year, and most of them are in the final stage at the time of diagnosis. The challenges lie in accessing cost-effective prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care of such diseases, not to mention the discrimination and stigma that is formed around them. Even though there are tests available which can detect these diseases before they cause symptoms, screening tests are expensive and non-affordable for marginalized. Dr. Pritesh Battalwar, along with a team of renowned experts, leads the initiative of reaching out to the ignored population of slum-dwelling women.

PLAN OF ACTION
Jeevandhara Health Mission helps reduce the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality due to these Chronic diseases by setting up medical camps for screening where they focus on awareness, health education, risk assessment, testing, treatment, appropriate referrals, and follow-ups. First, the women who participate are educated on the importance of Pap Smear Test for detecting cervical cancer and then the same is carried out for them along with tract infection tests and breast examination. They are then subjected to diabetes, anemia and bone density screening along with pulse, blood pressure, and BMI check ups. The team has developed a technology-based toolkit to enable locally trained community volunteers to gauge, record and report the vital parameters of screening, with the goal that the initiative becomes sustainable in the longer run.

EXPECTED IMPACT
Jeevandhara Health Mission has carried out 126 camps with 6375 women participants in and around Maharashtra in the last 4 years. All women diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, severe anaemia, osteoporosis and obesity are receiving follow-ups from Jeevandhara Health Mission through their Android app designed for this purpose. This intervention reduces the rate of premature deaths which is the biggest issue among women. It also helps women combat disability, suffering, and low productivity. There have been many cases where the participants were reluctant to get the tests done but were found positive and are now able to lead a better life. The upcoming camp is one such project, where about 50 women shall be screened and follow-ups will be administered.

Description:
Student’s Relief Society (SRS) started forming Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with the support of Eastern Rajasthan Package Programme in block Sanganer, Dist. Jaipur, from year1998 to 2002.
SRS has done hard efforts to expose the deprived Women of the area. These women were bounded in their own culture, costumes and superstitions. We created SHGs and trained them on agriculture, Health and livestock subjects too. These subject specialised trainees are being called “Krishi, Swasthaya and Pashu Sakhi” and started new and innovating practices in their domain. We trained them to grow crops with less water requirement, was an innovative work.

Considering the field situation, SRS decided to convert project into programme with consent of board members. This change was necessary to sustain the mind-set and behaviour of community and step was taken with participation approach. Village women started earning and taking lead in family. The aware Village women not just only raised themselves, but also their families. This eye opening change and a long term innovative programme of SRS upgraded Community’s mind-set. At present the programme is not funded by any agency, SHG’s Women have sustained themselves and are managing the groups on their own and forming new Self Help Groups.
